    ON THE SHORES OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN, NOT FAR FROM TOKYO, A DOZEN SCULPTORS FROM SIX NATIONS ARE WORKING ON MASSIVE PIECES OF FREE-FROM SCULPTURE. THE FINISHED SCULPTURES WILL GRACE SITES AT THE 1964 OLYMPIC GAMES IN TOKYO.

    MANY OF THE STATUES WEIGH AS MUCH AS TEN TONS. THEY ARE BEING CARVED AT A GREY STONE QUARRY CUT FROM A WOODED HILLSIDE ON CAPE MANAZURU, IN KANAGAWA PREFECTURE.

    THE SCULPTORS HAVE BEEN WORKING THERE, AT THE WORLD SYMPOSIUM OF MODERN SCULPTURE, SINCE JULY. THEY HAVE BEEN DEEPLY TANNED BY THE SUN, AND OCCASIONALLY RELAX BY SWIMMING IN THE BAY.

    DURING THE DAY, SCHOOL CHILDREN ARE BROUGHT BY THEIR TEACHERS TO WATCH THE ARTISTS AT WORK AND SKETCH THE SCENE FOR THEIR ART CLASSES.

    THE SCULPTORS ARE: AGUSTIN GARDENAS, OF CUBA; ROBERT COUNTURIER AND MAURICE LIPSI, OF FRANCE; HERBERT BAUMANN, OF WEST GERMANY; CARLO SIGNORI, OF ITALY; ANTOINE PONCET, OF SWITZERLAND; AND SHIN HONGO, MINORU SUZUKI, MENTARO KIMURA, YASUO MIZUI, BUSHIRO MORI, AND SHIN NOMIZU OF JAPAN.
