  • Description

AN AMERICAN AIR FORCE TRANSPORT PLANE, SHOT DOWN OVER THE VIETNAM-CAMBODIA BORDER LAST MONTH, HAS BEEN EXHIBITED TO THE PUBLIC IN PHNOM PENH, THE CAMBODIAN CAPITAL. EIGHT LIVES WERE LOST WHEN THE PLANE WAS BROUGHT DOWN BY VIET CONG GROUND FIRE ON OCTOBER 24.

ACCORDING TO AN AMERICAN SPOKESMAN THE AIRCRAFT "INADVERTENTLY" STRAYED OVER CAMBODIA. INVESTIGATIONS INDICATED THERE HAD BEEN A "MAP ERROR BECAUSE OF DIFFICULTY IN DETERMINING THE PRECISE BOUNDARIES", AND ALSO BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER AT THE TIME.

THE SPOKESMAN SAID U.S. HELICOPTERS WERE FIRED ON THE NEXT DAY WHILE TAKING PART IN OPERATIONS TO RECOVER THE BODIES.

(THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT ADMITTED ON OCTOBER 28 THAT VIETNAMESE PLANES STRAFED AND BOMBED A CAMBODIA VILLAGE ON OCTOBER 20 DUE TO A MAP-READING ERROR. THE CAMBODIAN GOVERNMENT PROTESTED AGAINST THE INCIDENT AND OTHER ALLEGED INCURSIONS BY VIETNAMESE PLANES ON OCTOBER 24 AND 25.)
