The Middle East...and as Egypt and israel hold talks in Alexandria on Palestinian self-rule, criticisms continue both inside Israel and abroad about Jewish settlements in occupied territory. The latest controversy is over the new settlement on the outskirts of Nablus, the biggest Arab town on the occupied West Bank. Early this month (June), the Israeli Cabinet voted narrowly in favour of creating the Jewish town and will invest two million dollars (U.S.) in its development. The move has been denounced within Israel by the opposition Labour Party and other groups...and on Sunday (10 June) members of the Peace Now movement staged a protest in Nabius.
SYNOPSIS: Several hundred demonstrators set up a blockade on the road leading to the hilltop where settlers took over private Arab fields last Thursday (7 June).
But they agreed to leave after Defence Minister Ezer Weizman arrived to ask them to avoid clashes with the settlers, all Gush Emunin fanatics.
Mr. Weizman himself had voted against the establishment of the settlement and had refused to sign a declaration that it was essential for Israel's security. But, he told the protestors, the settlement decision was now irrevocable.
