  • Description

Hundreds of women took part in a protest march through the streets of Madrid on Wednesday (24 November) night to demand equal pay and easier divorce proceedings.

SYNOPSIS: The demand for equal pay has long been a standard call in spanish women's liberation movements rallies. But the divorce controversy has been sparked by the recent enforcement of Article 449 in Spanish law. This adultery law means offenders may be imprisoned and ordered to pay the aggrieved husband of wife compensation.

Spanish judges have gone to great lengths to dismiss recent adultery cases on technical grounds, but on the day of the demonstration a man and a woman were convicted and sentenced to seven months imprisonment. Women claim they are much more susceptible to prosecution under the law in a country where "cabron" (cuckold) is the worst conceivable insult to a man.

Wednesday's march was conducted at a lively pace. Demonstrators filed through the streets carrying banners and chanting women's lib slogans. Some carried children.

Police eventually arrived in the area ... but by that time most of the marchers had dispersed.
