Background: A new political movement in Israel came into being today, "The Democratic Movement". In a press conference for local and foreign journalists, Yigal Yadin, well known professor of archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Israel's second Chief of Staff, presented the aims and principals of his movement. Its members are trying to go to the next elections as the "alternative", something for which the average Israeli who is not a party member is craving. But going over the founding members' names, listed, are many well known Israelis such as former army generals, professors at various universities, many members or ex-members of parties represented in the Knesset and by the look of it, the party is growing fast. One of the program's mainstays is the change of the electoral system and many Israelis believe this to be necessary in a move towards a two or three party system. Its second mainstay is a radical change in the economic and socio/economic field, whilst the principles spelled out by Yadin as to the foreign and security problems seem to be those of Rabin's Labour party.
