  • Description

The Republic of Singapore yesterday (Friday) celebrated its ninth anniversary as an independent nation with an armed forces parade and a colourful pageant through the city.

Singapore's President, Mr. Benjamin Sheares, inspected the guard of honour before taking the salute for the fly-past, the parade of armoured vehicles and a march past by infantry units.

But as Singapore entered its tenth year of independence since breaking away from Malaysia under Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, many are pondering the republic's future in an uncertain world trade period.

The soaring world inflation rate is also affecting Singapore. Local employers, faced with a rising wage bill after a period of government control, are worried that singapore workers are becoming too complacent in a background of slow productivity increase.

However, Singapore's economic leaders expect the South East Asian republic to maintain its seven percent growth rate despite the effects of the oil crisis.
