  • Description

Thousands of students in Ceylon did not attend school Dec 1 to protest against the take over by the Government of privately run schools in the country in order to enforce a unified system of national education.

Nearly sixty schools, most of them run by Catholic missions earlier offered to forego Government grant and give free tuition to children instead of handing over the schools to the Government.

In Ceylon national education is free from primary to university level.

The demonstration against the take over, however, were peaceful, and even the policemen who were out in full force were in good humour.
