  • Description

AT THE WASEDA UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO, THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS TURN UP TO HEAR VISITING UNITED STATES ATTORNEY-GENERAL MR.ROBERT F.KENNEDY (FEB.6).

SOME 4,000 STUDENTS PACKED THE OHOKUMA MEMORIAL HALL OF THE UNIVERSITY AND AMONG THEM WERE HUNDREDS OF "ZENGAKUREN" STUDENTS, THE ULTRA-LEFTISTS WHOSE DEMONSTRATIONS IN JUNE 1960 LED TO THE CANCELLATION OF GENERAL EISENHOWER'S VISIT TO JAPAN.

KENNEDY STARTED HIS SPEECH ABOUT DEMOCRACY AND YOUNG GENERATION, BUT THEN THE ZENGAKUREN STUDENTS STARTED SHOUTING SLOGANS THAT THE U.S.SHOULD RETURN OKINAWA TO JAPAN.OTHER STUDENTS SHOUTED BACK SAYING THAT THEY SHOULD HEAR KENNEDY'S SPEECH FIRST.

THE SHOUTS AND COUNTER-SHOUTS BROUGHT CONFUSION AND NECESSITATED SUSPENSION OF HIS SPEECH.MR.KENNEDY THEN TURNED TO A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE OKINAWA PROBLEM AND TOLD THE STUDENTS THAT HE WOULD DISCUSS THIS PROBLEM WITH HIS BROTHER, PRESIDENT KENNEDY.

HIS SPEECH WAS PUNCTUATED BY SOME SHOUTS AND INTERRUPTIONS, BUT AFTER AN HOUR KENNEDY HAD APPARENTLY WON OVER THE "OPPOSITION".HE AND HIS WIFE WERE CHEERED AND APPLAUDED BY THE STUDENTS AS THEY LEFT THE WASEDA UNIVERSITY.

THE KENNEDYS ARE ON A GOODWILL TOUR OF SOME ASIAN COUNTRIES INCLUDING INDONESIA.
