  • Description

TWO PORTRAIT BUSTS BY THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ITALIAN SCULPTOR BERNINI HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED IN ROME. THE WORKS HAD BEEN LOST FOR CENTURIES UNTIL THEY WERE FOUND BY DOCTOR IRVING LAVIN, AN AMERICAN ART HISTORIAN, IN THE CHURCH OF SAN GIOVANNI DEI FIORENTINI IN ROME.

DOCTOR LAVIN ANNOUNCED HIS FIND AT A LECTURE TO THE AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME ON FRIDAY (13 JANUARY). HE SAID THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK, THE BUST OF AN OLD MAN, WAS CARVED WHEN BERNINI WAS 13 YEARS OLD. IT WAS COMPARABLE TO ANY OF THE ARTIST'S NATURE WORK, AND CONFIRMED CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS OF HIS YOUTHFUL GENIUS, SAID DOCTOR LAVIN.

THE WORKS WERE FOUND IN THE SUB-BASEMENT OF THE CHURCH, COVERED IN DIRT AND WHITEWASH. THEY ARE BEING CLEANED, AND WILL BE INSTALLED IN THE CHURCH AT AN OFFICIAL CEREMONY.

BOTH ARE PORTRAITS OF EARLY BENEFACTORS OF THE CHURCH'S HOSPITAL.
