An Athens Appeals Court on Monday (July 5) sentenced two leading members of the Greek Communist Party to five and then years imprisonment for plotting to overthrow the military-backed Greek Government.

According to the indictment and witnesses for the prosecution, 48-year-old Efstratios Tsambis a member of the outlawed Greek Communist Party Central Committee and 55-year-old Constantine Litsas a leading party member, entered Greece illegally after the army takeover in April 1967. Their aim was to organise the underground machinery of the outlawed Greek Communist Party.

Tsambis was sentenced to ten years imprisonment and Litsas to Five. The charges had been based on an anti-sedition law passed in 1947 to quell an armed communist rebellion. The charge carries the death penalty.
