Background: INTRODUCTION: Two Syrian planes were reported to have been shot down in a dog-fight with Israeli jets over Southern Lebanon on New Year's Eve. The Syrian aircraft were intercepted by the Israeli planes which had just launched a rocket attack on high ground near Nabatieh and Tyre. At least eight people reported killed wounded in the attack.

SYNOPSIS: Eyewitness said four Syrian MIG jet fighters appeared after two formations of about 10 Israeli jets launched the rocket assault.

In a brief dogfight, one Syrian plane was seen crashing tot he ground and another into the sea. Syrian officials said two Israeli aircraft also went down, but this flatly denied by Israeli Air Force spokesmen.

At least eight houses were badly damaged in the israeli rocket attack, one of them the home of a Lebanese Minister.

The dog-fight was fourth clash between the Israeli and Syrian Air Forces in less than 18 months.
