Background: The wedding of a former Salvation Army girl from Nottingham, England and a blind Negro telephone operator, kept secret to avoid possible racial demonstrations, was filmed by Visnews Jan 23 in Nairobi, Kenya.
At first cameramen were stopped from photographing the actual ceremony - but after some persuasion and explanations the bride, (35-year-old) Miss Ruth Holloway, allowed filming.
Miss Holloway met her husband, 26-year-old John Kimuyu Kalendo, four years ago when working at a Salvation Army School for the blind in Africa and taught John to read braille.
They were married at the District Commissioner's Office in Nairobi with the bridegroom's mother and two sisters as witnesses. Although no flowers were provided by the couple for the ceremony, Mr. Wilkinson the district commissioner borrowed two vases of flowers, intended for a European wedding later that day, to brighten up the drab office.
John, employed by a firm of car importers as a telephone operator, earns about GBP10 a month. Attempts were made to dissuade the couple from marrying because of his low-paid job, but Miss Holloway said." I will work for both of us if necessary. I am used to living rough in Britain's slums and I am not afraid."
Before the wedding, a Kenya Government official advised the couple to make their home in Britain where social services for the blind are far ahead of Kenya's, but Miss Holloway decided that the climate here would not be suitable for her husband. The couple plan to live in an African location of Nairobi.
