    Background: INTRODUCTION:
The trial of 24 men accused of being involved in the murder of President Sadat of Egypt in Cairo on Saturday (21 November) amid strict security. The location of the military tribunal, which was encircled by armed guards, was kept secret until the last minute.Only 23 of the defendants appeared in court -- a 27-year-old student did not appear because of injuries. The authorities say he was hurt during his capture, but the defendants say he was badly beaten up in prison. The trial was adjourned to November the 30th while allegations by the defendants of torture are being investigated, and the defendants of torture are being investigated, and the defence lawyers study the charges.

SYNOPSIS: During the hearing, the prisoners were kept inside four specially-built cages inside the courtroom.

But they showed defiant.Lieutenant Khaled Islambouli, who is accused of leading the four-man assassination squad, waved a copy of the Koran and shouted: "I killed the Pharaoh", the name the defendants gave to the murdered president.

Other prisoners shouted to relatives in the courtroom - it was the first time they had seen their kinfolk since their arrest. They also chanted an Islamic slogan which ended with the words: "Unless religion regains its glory, blood will flow".

Only four of the defendants are accused of killing President Sadat; the rest are said to have aided or incited the attack.Abdel Saram Fareg is accused of being the ringleader, and a blind preacher is said to be the group's spiritual leader.Their fate will be decided by a three-man military tribunal headed by Major-General Samir Attia, the director of military courts.

In public print, the defendants have already been judged. The Egyptian press has already published reports of confessions allegedly made by the defendants while they were in custody, and has described them as guilty. Some correspondents believe the only uncertainty surrounding the trial is not the verdict, but how many of the defendants will be sentenced to death. The charges they face all carry the death penalty.
