At one yard - at Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, - the "old crocks" are being fed to special machines which pile them up in heaps and then flatten them into compressed lumps for delivery to the scrap merchants.
There are over a thousand cars at this yard, while at other yards, breakers are refusing to take any more - even free. One firm is buying a German-built automatic breaker which cuts up a car in a minute and a half.
