    Background: WARSAW, POLAND

Warsaw has never been renowned for it nightlife -- and what there was has been further curtailed since the imposition of a curfew under martial law. Now, since this restriction was lifted on July 2, things have improved and students have been the first to exploit this new-found freedom. They arranged a disco at a club called Stodola (the barn), which, by Western standards, might appear tame, but after the strictures of the previous months it was a breakthrough. Another students' venue was also drawing in merrymakers -- the Hybrydny Club -- but even this stopped way short of decadence, closing around midnight. This is the second time the curfew has been relaxed. An earlier spell of freedom was ended on May 2, after pro-Solidarity demonstrations in Warsaw. No-one knows whether this relaxation will last longer than the earlier one. But there are some cynics who claim it won't much matter anyway, since the lifting of the curfew hasn't brought back revelry, they say, only regular, and long-term queueing.
