  • Description

HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS BELONGING TO THE RIGHT-WING HINDU PARTY, JAN SANGH, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WENT ABOUT THE INDIAN CAPITAL, NEW DELHI, BLACKING OUT ENGLISH SIGNS AND ROAD NAMES WITH PAINT AND TAR.

THIS IS THE FIRST MOVE BY THE PARTY IN A CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE RETENTION OF ENGLISH AS INDIA'S OFFICIAL SECOND LANGUAGE. THE PARTY WANTS IT COMPLETELY REPLACED BY HINDI - OR BY REGIONAL LANGUAGES.

THE CAMPAIGN WAS ANNOUNCED LAST WEDNESDAY AND THE PARTY ISSUED INSTRUCTION THAT WHERE ENGLISH SIGNS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY HINDI TRANSLATION, THEY WERE NOT BE DEFACED. THE VOLUNTEERS HOWEVER PAYED LITTLE HEED AND WENT ABOUT THE CITY DEFACING HUNDREDS OF SIGNS. SOME SHOUTED SLOGANS AS THEY WENT CALLING FOR AN END OF "SLAVERY TO ENGLISH".

POLICE ARRESTED ABOUT FIFTY DEMONSTRATORS, BUT WERE UNABLE TO PREVENT A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE ENGLISH SIGNS IN NEW DELHI FROM BEING DEFACED.

LEADERS OF THE JAN SANGH PARTY HAVE DENIED THEIR CAMPAIGN IS A REACTION TO THE ANTI-HINDI AGITATION RECENTLY IN SOUTH INDIA. AN INDIAN GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID HOWEVER, THAT THE JAN SANGH PARTY WERE CARRYING OUT THEIR CAMPAIGN "VERY MUCH IN THE SPIRIT OF REVENGE".
