  • Description

Adlai Stevenson, United States representative to the United Nations in the new Kennedy Administration, officially took over his duties Jan. 23. At the towering U.N. building in New York, USA, he presented his credentials to U.N. Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjoeld.

The two men talked for almost an hour about current international problems, including the situation in the Congo Republic. Reports said no new policies had been discussed and no special lines of approach to international questions laid down.

Mr Stevenson (Democrat) twice fought - unsuccessfully - against General Eisenhower (Republican) for the United States Presidency. Recently he told the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Chinese People's Republic's admission to the U.N. may be impossible to prevent ... and was a probability at some future date.
