    Archbishop Maurice Otunga, of Nairobi, is one of 30 priests who will be elevated to Cardinal at a consistory in Rome next month.

    The archbishop celebrated the news yesterday (Sunday) by conducting mass at Karinga Mission, near Nairobi, where he also opened new living quarters for sisters of the mission.

    Archbishop Otunga's elevation brings to nine the number of African cardinals, and swells membership of the College of Cardinals to 145.

    The new cardinal was born in 1923 and, after his high school education, studies philosophy in Kampala and theology in Rome. He was ordained in 1950.

    He has held the post of Archbishop of Nairobi since December, 1971.

    Among his many duties in the Church in Africa is the chairmanship of the Kenya Episcopal Conference, He is also a member of the standing committee of SECAM, the Symposium of Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar.

    SYNOPSIS: Among 30 new cardinals announced by the Pope on Friday was Archbishop Maurice Otunga, of Nairobi. The archbishop decided to celebrate the news by conducting mass at a Kikuyu mission near Nairobi (on Sunday). It was his first official function since the Pope's announcement, which brings the number of African cardinals to nine. Archbishop Otunga will be elevated to cardinal at a ceremony in Rome next month. The 30 new cardinals will boost membership of the College of Cardinals to 145.

    Kenya's new cardinal was born in nineteen-twenty-three. After secondary school education he studied philosophy at a seminary in Kampala. From these he went to Rome to study theology, and was ordained in 1950. During yesterday's service the archbishop confirmed his new appointment to be delighted congregation.

    After the service, Archbishop Otunga led a procession to new living quarters which have been built for the sisters of the mission. More than four thousand people watched him bless the building. The Archbishop holds several posts in African church life including the chairmanship of the Kenya Episcopal. Conference. He is also a member of the standing committee of SECAM, the Symposium of Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar.
