  • Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME THE UNITED STATES HAS RELEASED FILM SHOWING THE UNDERWATER LAUNCHING OF A POLARIS MISSILE FROM A SUBMERGED SUBMARINE. THE TEST WAS MADE OFF THE FLORIDA COAST RECENTLY FROM THE NUCLEAR POWERED FLEET BALLISTIC SUBMARINE "ETHAN ALLEN" USING A NEW MODEL OF THE POLARIS, THE A-2.

THE SUBMARINE WAS CRUISING AT PERISCOPE DEPTH 30 MILES OFF THE FLORIDA COAST AT THE TIME OF THE TESTS. A TELEVISION CAMERA MOUNTED IN THE CONNING TOWER SHOWED THE MISSILE BLASTED OUT OF THE SUBMARINE TOWARDS THE SURFACE AS THE MISSILE, FITTED WITH A DUMMY WAR HEAD, BURST OUT OF THE WATER AND HEADED FOR THE TARGET AREA.

"ETHAN ALLEN", 6,900 TONS, IS THE FIRST SUBMARINE TO BE DESIGNED FROM THE KEEL UP SPECIFICALLY TO LAUNCH THE POLARIS A-2, WHICH HAS A RANGE OF 1500 NAUTICAL MILES. THE SUBMARINE WILL ALSO BE CAPABLE OF CARRYING A STILL FURTHER IMPROVED VERSION OF THE POLARIS, THE A-3, WHEN IT BECOMES OPERATIONAL.

UNITED STATES NAVY OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED THIS MONTH THAT 29 POLARIS - CARRYING SUBMARINES ARE EITHER IN SERVICE OR ARE ABOUT TO BE COMPLETED.
