Background: Representatives from 16 African countries are meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, for a study of environmental problems and methods of combating them.
The Workshop on Environmental Education was opened on Monday (22 July) and will continue for a week.
The seminar will focus mainly on the pre-service education of primary school teachers in environmental matters. Particular emphasis in being placed on the adaption of existing teacher training curricula to the requirements of an environmentally-oriented curriculum in the primary schools of each country.
Its taking a detailed look at teacher preparatory programmes in the 16 countries represented at the workshop.
One of the first speakers at the seminar was Kenya's Minister for Natural Resources, Mr. W. O. Omamo.
He said that as Africa has increasingly become part of a world community her problems have become inseparable from those of the rest of the world. However, he suggested Africa should not be wholly dependent on outside technology for the identification and solution of her problems. Educational planners, he said, must realise that problems and their solutions are better appreciated when they are recognised by the people themselves.
Some of these problems being experienced in Africa were outlined by Mr. Omamo. They included:- soil degradation caused by soil erosion; overgrazing caused by overstocking; uneconomic crop and livestock management; hunger and poverty resulting in malnutrition; and slums which have developed as a result of faulty human settlement planning.
