Background: An exhibition showing the products of more than 500 leading Swiss companies was opened at Gezira in Egypt on Tuesday (23 November).

SYNOPSIS: The exhibition, which is to last ten days, was organised following the Egyptian Government's announcement of its intention to follow an economic open door policy. Egypt's Prime Minister, Mr. Mamdouh Salem, and Switzerland's Minister of Economy, Mr. Ernst Brugger, both took part in the opening ceremony.

Many of the firms taking part in the exhibition specialise in watch-making and the production of other precision equipment. After cutting the ceremonial ribbon, the Egyptian Prime Minister and his party--which included his Minister of Commerce, Mr. Zakaria Tewfik Abdul Fattah -- toured the display stands and examined some of the exhibits.

Since Egypt announced her economic open door policy, a large number of industrial delegations from Switzerland have visited the country to study joint venture projects.

An agreement to encourage investments and enhance co-operation between the two countries was signed in July 1973. Earlier this year Switzerland took part in the Cairo International Fair for the first time, and in June there were Swiss exhibitors at Egypt's Tourism and Hotel Show. During the first half of the year trade exchange between Egypt and Switzerland amounted to 123 million Swiss frances compared to 184 million in 1975 and 142 million in 1974.
