    THE BRITISH CONTINGENT OF 49 CAR CREWS SET OUT FROM LONDON JUST BEFORE DAWN TODAY (SATURDAY) AT THE START OF THE MONTE CARLO RALLY - THE FIRST TIME THAT LONDON HAS BEEN THE BRITISH STARTING POINT IN THE 2,700-MILE (4,400 KILOMETRE) RALLY. FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS, GLASGOW IN SCOTLAND HAS BEEN THE BRITISH STARTING POINT.

    THE RALLY REALLY STARTED YESTERDAY, WITH THE DEPARTURE OF 40 CARS FROM STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN. OTHER STARTING POINTS WERE MINSK; RUSSIA; WARSAW; POLAND; FRANKFURT, WEST GERMAN; PARIS, FRANCE; LISBON, PORTUGAL; ATHENS, GREECE - AND MONTE CARLO ITSELF.

    THE BRITISH CONTINGENT IS ALLOWED TWO-AND-A-HALF HOURS TO COVER THE 80 MILES TO DOVER FOR THE FERRY TRIP ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL. SINCE THE MONTE CARLO RALLY BEGAN IN 1911, DRIVERS IN BRITISH CARS HAVE WON IT SEVEN TIMES.

    THE FIRST FOUR TEAMS AWAY TODAY, IN ORDER OF THEIR LEAVING, WERE: (93) SYDNEY ALLARD AND TOM FISK, IN AN ALLARDETTE; (95) DAVID POLLARD AND BARRY HUGHES, IN A HILLMAN IMP; (106) MISSES VALERIE PIRIE AND S. REEVES, IN A TRIUMPH SPITFIRE; (118) AND ROB SLOTEMAKER AND ALAN TAYLOR, ALSO IN A TRIUMPH SPITFIRE.
