BIKILA WAS PROMOTED TO LIEUTENANT IN THE ETHIOPIAN ROYAL HOUSEHOLD GUARD AFTER HIS 1964 VICTORY AND ANOTHER WIN AT MEXICO CITY COULD GAIN HIM PROMOTION UNDER EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE.

    BIKILA, AN IDOL IN ETHIOPIA -- SINCE HIS VICTORY AT ROME IN 1960 WHEN HE RAN BAREFOOTED TO BREAK EMIL ZATOPEK'S OLYMPIC RECORD IN TWO HOURS 15 MINUTES AND 16.2 SECONDS -- HAS HAD RECENT FOOT TROUBLE.

    DESPITE THIS INJURY WHICH HE CLAIMS COULD ROB HIM OF THE CHANCE TO WIN HIS THIRD CONSECUTIVE GOLD MEDAL, BIKILA IS TRAINING SOLIDLY UNDER THE EYE OF HIS TRAINER ONNI NISKANEN. THE CHAMPION IS NOW 36.

    NISKANEN HAS LIVED IN ETHIOPIA FOR 22 YEARS. HE HELPED DISCOVER BIKILA IN 1959 BEFORE HIS ROME SUCCESS.

    BIKILA BEAT HIS OWN RECORD AT TOKYO WHEN HE COVERED THE MARATHON DISTANCE IN TWO HOURS 12 MINUTES AND 11.2 SECONDS ALTHOUGH ONLY FIVE WEEKS BEFORE THE EVENT HE HAD UNDERGONE AN APPENDIX OPERATION.

    IN AUGUST THIS YEAR, THE MARATHON CHAMPION ENTERED A WEST GERMAN SURGICAL CLINIC FOR TREATMENT TO AN OLD LEG INJURY. HE SAYS HE'S NOW RECOVERED FROM THIS INJURY.

    LAST YEAR HE CONTESTED THE INTERNATIONAL ZARAUZ MARATHON IN NORTHERN SPAIN, BUT HE RETIRED AFTER A FALL AT THE HALF-WAY MARK WHEN HE WAS FAVOURED TO WIN.

    BIKILA ROSE TO SERGEANT RANK AFTER HIS FIRST GOLD MEDAL AND THEN REACHED THE RANK OF LIEUTENANT IN THE ROYAL HOUSEHOLD GUARD AFTER HIS TOKYO VICTORY.
