  • Description

Summer suddenly became winter in Selden, Kansas, recently when this small town and the surrounding counter, side were covered with an 18-inch-thick olanket of hail during a freak hailstorm.

Crops of wheat were badly beaten down and there was considerable damage to local buildings. National Guardsmen helped evacuate people from buildings where overloaded roofs threatened to cave in. With roads and streets knee-deep in the icy mantle, traffic was brought to a standstill.

By the evening, most of Selden's 350 inhabitants had left their homes; As the hail melted and nearby rivers became swollen, there was fear of further damage from flooding.
