TRANSCRIPT: Weisfield's U-74 from Seattle, washington; Bill Muncey's atlas U-71 quickly established themselves as the boats to beat in preliminary heats. Weisfield's driven by veteran Bill Schumacher scared the opposition during qualifying rounds with a lap of over one hundred, eighteen point four miles per hour. That trend continued in the first two heats as Weisfield's won the first heat going away and held off Munsey's challenge in the second race. Entering the final, only defending champion Miss Budweiser with first or second place finishes had a chance to catch the leader but she stalled on the second turn and finished third overall. Schumacher and Munsey duelled through the first two laps with Schumacher gaining a permanent edge on the east turn. For Schumacher four new course records, including an overall average of one hundred ten point seven-o-nine miles per hour. That snapped the old record by more than nine miles per hour. Munsey averaged one hundred eight for his race in the new boat. Mechanical trouble knocked out four of the nine boats early including defending national champion Payenpak. The thunderboats next compete June first on the Potomac River in Washington D.C. ... In Miami this is Mark Rosenweig reporting.

Schumacher was pressed by Bill Munsey in his atlas U-71 but it was his first time aboard the new boat in open competition and he was still familiarising himself with the craft.

Besides the winner's trophy schumacher also set four new course records, including an average overall speed of 110.01 mph -- 9 mph better than the old record.
