  • Description

The United States Navy's second big aircraft-carrier fire in just over one month: On Jan. 24th the giant American carrier Saratoga - weighing 76,000 tons when fully loaded -- arrived in Phaleron Bay, off Athens, Greece, following the fire on board which killed four officers and three men.

Last December, another big carrier, the Constellation, caught fire while she was nearing completion at Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York. There was heavy damage and fifty civilian workers died.

Fire on the Saratoga broke out at night and blazed for two hours before being brought under control by the ship's fire teams. It was caused by a ruptured oil line. An official enquiry is taking place.

U.S. shore-based naval officers went by launch to the carrier soon after it arrived under its own steam at Athens.
