  • Description

The Japanese will enter the Formula One racing world later this season with a car designed and built by a newly formed company. Known as the Maki, the car has been financed by a group of young Japanese businessmen who say they have no links with motor companies such as Honda and Toyota.

The Maki is being tested at Silverstone race circuit in England with New Zealand driver Howden Ganley behind the wheel. The car looks different from other Formula One cars. The front is wider and the car has much more bodywork than the usual sparsely bodied Formula One design. The rear engine, usually open to the air for cooling, is covered by a body panel in the Maki. The car is fitted with a Ford engine.

So far the Maki has only been tried out on the track at practice. It was planed to enter it in the Spanish and Belgian Grand Prix, but the mechanics didn't feel it was ready for competition.
