  • Description

IN COLOGNE, WEST GERMANY, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), DENMARK WON THE WORLD AMATEUR TEAM TRIAL CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP OVER 100-KILOMETRES (62 1/2 MILES) BY THE NARROW MARGIN OF 24-SECONDS FROM THE NETHERLANDS IN THE TIME OF 2 HOURS 9 MINUTES 3 SECONDS. THE FAVOURITES, ITALY, FINISHED THIRD, JUST OVER A MINUTE BEHIND THE WINNERS.

THE RACE, HELD ROUND THE OUTSKIRTS OF COLOGNE, BEGAN IN HEAVY RAIN. CONDITIONS GENERALLY WERE BAD AND SEVERAL TEAMS HAD THEIR RIDERS SKID AND CRASH ON THE WET ROADS. GRADUALLY THE WEATHER EASED AND ITALY, THE LAST TEAM OFF, WENT AWAY AS THE SUN CAME OUT.

BRITAIN'S FOUR-MAN TEAM CAME IN LAST AT THE 17-NATIONS COMPETING AFTER A SERIES OF PUNCTURES AND SPILLS.

EAST GERMANY COMPLETED THE FIRST HALF OF THE RACE IN THE EXCELLENT TIME OF 1 HOUR 2 MINUTES 21 SECONDS, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THAT PACE IN THE SECOND HALF, WHICH TOOK THEM A LITTLE OVER 1 HOUR 10 MINUTES.

FRANCE ENDED IN FOURTH PLACE WITH A TIME OF 2 HOURS 10 MINUTES 42 SECONDS; THE SOVIET UNION WAS FIFTH IN 2 HOURS 11 MINUTES 7 SECONDS AND SWEDEN SIXTH IN 2 HOURS 11 MINUTES 43 SECONDS.
