  • Description

IN SPITE OF THE RELATIVE QUIET ALONG THE BORDER BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA FOLLOWING THE RECENT CLASHES, TENSION IS STILL HIGH IN THE AREA AND AMERICAN TROOPS STATIONED THERE ARE STILL ON A 24-HOUR ALERT. THE U.S. 23RD INFANTRY REGIMENT MAINTAINS CONSTANT BORDER PATROLS AND IS READY TO MOVE IN TROOPS, TANKS AND ARMOURED CARS AT A MOMENT'S NOTICE.

THE PATROLLING TROOPS USE ARMOURED CARS EQUIPPED WITH M-60 MACHINE GUNS AS THEY PATROL THE LENGTH OF THE DEMILITARISED ZONE THREE TIMES A DAY. EACH ARMOURED CAR CARRIES 13 MEN ARMED WITH THE LATEST M-16 RIFLES AND CARRYING ENOUGH FOOD AND AMMUNITION TO LAST A WEEK. SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS ALSO KEEP A CLOSE WATCH ON THE BORDER AREA.

IN THE CENTRE OF THE DEMILITARISED ZONE AND JUST SOUTH OF PANMUNJON - WHERE THE SOUTH KOREANS AND THEIR AMERICAN ALLIES KEEP UP CONSTANT TRUCE NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE NORTH KOREANS - IS A VILLAGE WHICH IS "OUT OF BOUNDS" TO OUTSIDERS BUT WHICH ENJOYS A STANDARD OF LIVING IN COMPENSATION THAT IS SCARCELY EQUALLED ELSEWHERE IN KOREA. A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN WAS RECENTLY AUTHORISED TO VISIT THE VILLAGE ON THURSDAY FOR JUST ONE HOUR.

KNOWN AS "FREEDOM VILLAGE",. IT WAS FORMED IN AUGUST, 1953 IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PANMUNJON CONFERENCE, AND THERE IS A SIMILAR VILLAGE ALMOST NEXT DOOR - BUT ON THE NORTH KOREAN SIDE. THE SOUTH KOREAN VILLAGE INCLUDES 219 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHO ENJOY AT LEAST ONE INDISPUTABLE FREEDOM - THE FREEDOM FROM GOVERNMENT TAXES. THE VILLAGERS ARE MOSTLY ENTIRELY ENGAGED IN AGRICULTURE, LOOKING AFTER SOME 30 COWS AND 140 CHICKENS.

THE VILLAGE HAS ITS OWN POWER GENERATOR, AND THE VILLAGE AUTHORITIES ARE SOON TO ERECT CONCRETE POWER POLES AND THEIR OWN WATER SUPPLY. THERE IS ONE PRIMARY SCHOOL, CATERING FOR 32 PUPILS AND STAFFED BY TWO WOMEN TEACHERS. THERE IS ALSO A PUBLIC HALL. A PUBLIC BATH HOUSE AND A DISPENSARY WHICH AN AMERICAN DOCTOR VISITS TWICE A MONTH.

TO DETER INTRUDERS THE VILLAGE IS SURROUNDED BY LAND MINES AND WIRE ENTANGLEMENTS.
