  • Description

ONE OF THE BIGGEST MILITARY EXERCISES CARRIED OUT BY THE SOUTH EAST ASIA TREATY ORGANISATION SINCE ITS INCEPTION 1956 WAS CLIMAXED ON THURSDAY (JUNE 4) WITH A FULL-SCALE AMPHIBIOUS AND AIRBORNE ASSAULT ON THE ISLAND OF MINDORO, IN THE CENTRAL PHILIPPINES.

MORE THAN 20 THOUSAND MEN FROM THE UNITED STATES, BRITAIN, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, FRANCE AND THE PHILIPPINES TOOK PART IN THE WAR GAMES, WHICH LASTED ONE MONTH. TWO OTHER SEATO POWERS, THAILAND AND PAKISTAN, PROVIDED OBSERVERS.

A TOTAL OF 75 SHIPS AND 500 AIRCRAFT WERE DEPLOYED FOR THE COMBINED OPERATION. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO LIBERATE PART OF MINDORO FROM AN ENEMY OCCUPATION FORCE PLAYED BY A COMBINED FORCE OF FILIPINO AND AMERICAN TROOPS.

PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL LATER TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT THE EXERCISE, NAMED "LIGTAS", (A FILIPINO WORD MEANING RESCUE OR LIBERATE), SHOULD SERVE NOTICE TO ANY POTENTIAL AGGRESSOR THAT ANY HOSTILE ACTION IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA WOULD BE MET WITH EFFECTIVE COUNTER ACTION BY THE ALLIES OF THE SEATO ALLIANCE.

THE PURPOSE OF THE EXERCISE WAS TO PROVIDE COMBINED TRAINING FOR SEATO MEMBER NATIONS IN PLANNING AND EXECUTING OF AMPHIBIOUS AND AIRBORNE OPERATIONS OF A TYPE POSSIBLE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA.
