  • Description

THE LATEST MOVE IN THE DISPUTE BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF SPAIN AND BRITAIN OVER GIBRALTAR HAS BEEN THE CLOSING BY SPANISH AUTHORITIES OF THE FRONTIER BETWEEN THE MAINLAND AND THE ROCK TO ALL BUT PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC.

BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE ON PATROL ALONG THE BORDER BETWEEN GIBRALTAR AND THE MAINLAND OF SPAIN AS THE IRON GATES WERE CLANGED SHUT LAST NIGHT (MONDAY). THE SPANISH AUTHORITIES HAD SAID THAT WHEN THEY RE-OPENED THE FOLLOWING MORNING, THE USUAL TRAFFIC OF CARS AND MERCHANDISE WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED.

BUT DURING THE NIGHT BRITISH OFFICIALS WERE TOLD BY SPANISH FRONTIER AUTHORITIES THAT SPANISH WORKERS WITH JOBS IN GIBRALTAR WOULD BE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL BY BUS RIGHT UP TO THE BORDER FENCES. BUT AS THEY WALKED ACROSS THE FRONTIER AFTER LEAVING THEIR BUSES, THE WORKERS STILL HAD THEIR PASSES CAREFULLY CHECKED BY SPANISH POLICEMEN.
