  • Description

The Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, visited the National Census Board Secretariat in Lagos on Thursday (22 November) to inspect preparations for the national census, which begins on November 25.

General Gowon was shown over the census headquarters by the Board Chairman, Chief Adetokuobo Ademola, who will deploy 300,000 field workers during the seven-day population count.

The cost of the National Census, the first in ten years, has been out at between 20 and 25 million Naira (about GBP 9 million sterling).

All houses in Nigeria have been listed and marked in preparation for the population count, much of which will be conducted in extremely remote areas. Provisions have been made for the hiring of bicycles, donkeys and camels to be used by census workers where there are no motorable roads.

Nigeria, with an area of more than 350,000 square miles (900,000 sq.kms) is the most populous country in Africa. In 1970, the population was estimated at over 50 million people; in 1911, when the first nationwide census was held, Nigeria's population was only 16 million.

Schools throughout the country will be closed during the census so that teachers and senior students can help in the operation. The government has also decided to reduce working house in the major cities by two to three hours so that workers can be at home when the count is taken.

Between midnight and dawn on the first day of the census, officials will go around counting people without homes.

The census will also tabulate such national characteristics as religion, ethnic origin/nationality, and languages spoken. There are about 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria.
