  • Description

A NEW AND VERY ADVANCED DEEP TRIALS UNIT HAS RECENTLY BEEN ADDED TO THE UNRIVALLED RESEARCH FACILITIES AT THE ROYAL NAVAL PHYSIOLOGICAL LABORATORY AT ALVERSTOKE, NEAR GOSPORT IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND.THE LABORATORY IS CONCERNED WITH RESEARCH INTO SUBMARINE ESCAPE TECHNIQUES, EFFECTS OF MARINE EXPLOSIONS ON THE HUMAN FRAME, AND NOW WITH THE AID OF THIS NEW DEEP TRIALS UNIT, IT WILL BE ABLE TO PROBE MORE THOROUGHLY INTO THE PROBLEMS OF DEEP DIVING - IN PARTICULAR DECOMPRESSION SICKNESS, INERT GAS NARCOSIS AND OXYGEN POISONING.

WITH THESE NEW FACILITIES MEN AND EQUIPMENT CAN BE SUBJECTED TO PRESSURES EQUIVALENT TO THOSE EXPERIENCED 1125-FEET (APPROX 350-METRES) BELOW THE SEA.EXPERIMENTS CAN BE CONDUCTED IN A DRY ATMOSPHERE OR UNDERWATER.A HEATING AND REFRIGERATION PLANT HAS BEEN INSTALLED TO CREATE WATER TEMPERATURES VARYING FROM ARCTIC TO TROPICAL CONDITIONS.CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION ENABLES SUBJECTS TO BE KEPT UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION THROUGHOUT EXPERIMENTS.

THE UNIT IS HOUSED IN A BASIC TWO STOREY BUILDING WHICH HAS HAD THE UPPER FLOOR EXTENDED TO PROVIDE A LOADING BAY FOR BULKY EQUIPMENT AND REST FACILITIES FOR SUBJECTS 'SURFACING' FROM A 'DIVE'.THE BASIC DIVING VESSEL IS ATTACHED TO TWO AIR LOCKS AND A COMPRESSION CHAMBER CONTAINED IN THE UNIT'S OPERATIONS ROOM.THE UPPER HALF OF THE DIVING VESSEL PROTRUDES INTO THE OPERATING ROOM, AND IS THE 'DRY' HALF IN WHICH THE DIVER'S ATTENDANT IS STATIONED DURING EXPERIMENTS.THE LOWER HALF OF THE VESSEL EXTENDS DOWNWARDS THROUGH THE GROUND FLOOR.THIS PART OF THE VESSEL CAN BE FILLED WITH UP TO 6,000 GALLONS OF WATER, AND HAS A BUOYANCY OPERATED PLATFORM WHICH IS USED FOR TAKING DIVERS UP AND DOWN.

IN ADDITION THERE ARE THREE HORIZONTAL VESSELS, THE LARGEST OF WHICH IS THE COMPRESSION CHAMBER IN WHICH THE DIVER PAUSES TO DO HIS DECOMPRESSION 'STOPS'.THIS VESSEL IS FITTED WITH SEATS, BUNKS AND ALL OTHER NECESSARY COMPORTS, FOR AFTER VERY DEEP DIVES DECOMPRESSION CAN TAKE AS MUCH AS TWO OR THREE DAYS.

THE LABORATORY HAS A WORLD WIDE REPUTATION, AND IN PARTICULAR NATO COUNTRIES AND THE UNITED STATES TAKE A REGULAR INTEREST IN ITS WORK.CLOSE CONTACT IS ALSO MAINTAINED WITH INDIA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND.
