Background: Despite reports that professional football is on the decline in France, crowds continue to pour into the Marseilles club ground. The main attraction is the two brilliant imported Brazilian stars, Paulo Cesar and Jairzhinho.

They were signed by Marseilles at the start of the present season. The news came as a big surprise, since Brazilian players have usually resisted lucrative offers to play abroad.

And their effect on the French side has been electric. Marseilles have found a new flair and goal-scoring zest. There was an emphatic example of this earlier last month, when Marseilles played ???.

The Cesar-Jairziho double-act produced three goals to demolish the opposition.

Cesar, wearing the number eight shirt, torments his mid-field opponents as he schemes openings for Jairzinho. And Cesar ??? slow, ambling style conceals a truly deceptive change of ???
Jairzhinho, second only to Pele in the great Brazilian squad of 1970, scored seven goals for the World Cup-winning side. Wearing the number 16 shirt for Marseilles, he still shows himself one of the great goal-poachers of all time.

The final score in that Marseilles League game read like this Cesar-Jairzinho 3, Rennes 0.
