  • Description

When Spain and Portugal meet on the football field, Latin temperament usually starts to simmer. And at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid the game between the neighbouring countries was but a few minutes old before feet and fists began to fly. Jostling, tripping, brawling - even worse than usual. And then a flash of genuine athletic endeavour as Gento streaks up the left wing, centres the ball to Tejada....alas, the ball strikes the post from Tejada's header. Back to brawling and referee M. Lequesne seems to be letting the game get completely out of hand, but even he is stirred to intervention....and the tumult spreads to the crowd. In the second half, things get even worse. Players are felled like ninepins and eventually. Lequesne awards a free kick to Spain - a few yards from the Portuguese goal. Eventually Di Stefano - about the only player a field who kept his heed - scores with the free kick. It's the only goal of a rough, tough match.
