  • Description

SOME 270 CADETS AT THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY, SANDHURST IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND RECEIVED THEIR COMMISSIONS TODAY (THURSDAY) IN THE TRADITIONAL SOVEREIGN'S PARADE - OR 'PASSING OUT' PARADE.

THE SOVEREIGN'S PARADE IS THE ANNUAL HIGHLIGHT IN THE LIFE OF THE SANDHURST ACADEMY, BUT WHEREAS IN THE PAST THE QUEEN HAS ALWAYS BEEN REPRESENTED BY ANOTHER MEMBER OF THE ROYAL FAMILY OR A DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER, TODAY'S (THURSDAY'S) PARADE WAS UNIQUE: FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE SHE CAME TO THE THRONE, QUEEN ELIZABETH TOOK THE SALUTE HERSELF.

THE SWORD OF HONOUR IS AWARDED TO THE SENIOR OFFICER CADET WHO IS CONSIDERED BY THE COMMANDANT TO BE THE BEST OF HIS TERM. THE QUEEN'S MEDAL GOES TO THE CADET FIRST IN THE FINAL ORDER OF MERIT.

ALTHOUGH THE MAJORITY OF THE 1,000 CADETS ON PARADE COME FROM THE BRITISH ARMY, QUITE A NUMBER OF THEM HAVE BEEN SENT TO SANDHURST FOR TRAINING FROM COMMONWEALTH AND FOREIGN ARMIES. IN PARTICULAR, AMONG THE 270 CADETS WHO RECEIVED THEIR COMMISSIONS TODAY, THERE WERE REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE ARMIES OF UGANDA, NIGERIA, TANZANIA, JAMAICA, ZAMBIA AND THAILAND.
