SYNOPSIS: Soviet troops in the western sector of Berlin...A detachment of the Soviet Guard Regiment marched to the Soviet War Memorial in the British sector on Wednesday in a ceremony marking the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Soviet Army.

The Soviet War Memorial is near the famous Brandenburg Gate. The ceremony took the form of a simple wreath-laying -- but it coincided with celebrations throughout East Germany marking the anniversary.

As the troops carried out the ceremony they were watched by a number of officials - including the Soviet Ambassador to East Germany, Mr Yefremov.

The troops were reviewed by the Commander in Chief of Warsaw Pact forces in East Germany, General Kurkotkin. When the ceremony was over, the Soviet troops marched back across the frontier into East Berlin.
