    The official Gaullist candidate for the French Presidential election, former Prime Minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas, made a last-minute effort yesterday (2 May) to rally support for his flagging cause. French opinion polls have shown M. Chaban-Delmas legging behind the other two main contenders, socialist Francois Mitterrand and conservative Velery Giscard d'Estaing.

    With only twenty-four hours of the official election campaign left, prior to Sunday's first round of voting, M. Chaban-Delams chose to address a meeting in the south of Paris. It turned into his most successful public rally to date.

    Backed by huge portraits of the late President Pompidou and General de Gaulle, M. Chaban-Delmas was acclaimed by about 15,000 wildly cheering supporters The chant of "Chaban, President" rang round the hall.

    The Gaullists' idol relied on tradional oratory to call his supporters to action. In the following extract, he used a variety of homely images to defend himself from criticism that he has over-emphasised foreign policy during his campaign:
