  • Description

LEBANESE ARMY UNITS, INCLUDING TANKS AND ARMOURED VEHICLES, HAVE MOVED UP TO GUARD MAIN ROADS NEAR LEBANON'S BORDER WITH SYRIA. THEIR OBJECT IS TO PREVENT A PUSH BY EL FATAH GUERILLA FORCES IN THE HILLS TOWARDS THEIR COMRADES IN THE SOUTH OF THE COUNTRY.

THE ARMY UNITS HAVE BLOCKED THE MAIN ROAD RUNNING SOUTH PARALLEL WITH THE BORDER JUST OUTSIDE THE TOWN OF RASHAYYA.

CONFRONTING THEM ARE THE GUERILLA FORCES. BUT THE SOLDIERS ARE UNDER STRICT ORDERS NOT TO ATTACK, ONLY TO INTERCEPT ANY NEW DRIVE BY THE GUERILLAS.

LAST FRIDAY (24 OCTOBER), A FORCE OF SEVERAL HUNDRED GUERILLAS - BELIEVED TO HAVE CROSSED THE BORDER FROM SYRIA - ESTABLISHED THEMSELVES IN SEVERAL VILLAGES IN THE AREA.

ONE FORCE OF ABOUT 50 MEN, EQUIPPED WITH JEEPS, TRUCKS AND AT LEAST ONE ANTI-TANK GUN, MOVED IN TO TAKE UP POSITIONS IN THE VILLAGE OF HAIHA - A MERE 200 YARDS (182 METRES) FROM THE ARMY TANKS.

THE TWO SIDES HAVE BEEN EXCHANGING SHOTS. BUT THE ONLY CASUALTY WHEN THIS FILM WAS SHOT HAD BEEN A LOCAL SHEPHERD, HIT IN THE STOMACH BY A STRAY BULLET.
