  • Description

A LARGE SCALE AMERICAN LANDING EXERCISE, "SEVEN SEAS", REACHED ITS CLIMAX IN SOUTH KOREA AUGUST 10 WHEN NEARLY 2,500 SOLDIERS OF THE 7TH DIVISION LANDED ON POHANG BEACH IN THE CENTRE OF A GIANT SMOKE SCREEN. ACCORDING TO BRIGADIER-GENERAL MURDOCH, THE LEADER OF THE OPERATION, THE PURPOSE OF THE COMBINED EXERCISE "WAS TO TEST THE US EIGHTH ARMY'S ABILITY TO MOBILIZE AND EFFECT, VERY EMPLOY A REINFORCED AMPHIBIOUS BRIGADE UNDER COMBAT CONDITIONS."
SUPPORTED BY 'AMPHIBIOUS SQUADRON 5' FROM THE 7TH FLEET AND THE 8TH TACTICAL FIGHTER WING FROM JAPAN, THE LANDING FORCE IMMEDIATELY BROKE THROUGH A TRIANGLE DEFENCE FRONT OF "ENEMY POSTS" ON THE COAST. WHILE THE ENEMY POSTS WERE BEING POUNDED BY F100 JET FIGHTERS AND A NAVAL BOMBARDMENT, NEARLY 50 LANDING CRAFT SLIPPED ONTO THE BEACH.

A NEW TYPE OF HELICOPTER, THE 'H 37', PARTICIPATED IN THE EXERCISE BY TRANSPORTING AN INFANTRY COMPANY FROM THE SEA TO AN ENEMY HELD POST IN A HIGH POSITION.

TACTICALLY, THE LANDING WAS DESIGNED TO LINK UP WITH UNITED NATIONS FORCES IN THE TAEGU AREA AND TO ISOLATE A LARGE SEGMENT OF "AGGRESSOR FORCES" ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT UN TROOPS WERE STRANDED ON THE SOUTHERN TIP OF SOUTH KOREA AFTER BEING PUSHED BACK BY AN INVADING AGGRESSOR.
