    A CANADIAN ECONOMIC MISSION, CURRENTLY VISITING NORTH AND WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES, LAST WEDNESDAY (MARCH 13) ANNOUNCED DETAILS OF CANADIAN GOVERNMENT AID FOR THE IVORY COAST.THE DELEGATION IS BEING LED BY THE FORMER CANADIAN MINISTER OF JUSTICE, LIONEL CHEVRIER.

    MR. CHEVRIER TOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE AT THE MINISTRY OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS AND FINANCE IN ABIDJAN THAT THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT WAS PREPARED TO PARTICIPATE IN SEVERAL PRIORITY PROJECTS. HE SAID THAT CANADA WOULD PROVIDE A THREE PERCENT 30- YEAR LOAN TO THE IVORY COAST FOR RURAL ELECTRIFICATION PROGRAMMES. THE PROJECT WILL COVER A PILOT ZONE OF 50 VILLAGES NORTHWEST OF ABIDJAN. CANADA WILL ALSO DONATE BUILDING MATERIAL AND FURNITURE FOR A NATIONAL LIBRARY, PLUS SCHOOL EQUIPMENT AND PAPER WORTH ABOUT GBP83 - THOUSAND STERLING.

    MR. CHEVRIER SAID CANADA WOULD ALSO EXPAND HER COOPERATION PROGRAMME. HE SAID CANADA WAS PUTTING ANOTHER GBP83- THOUSAND STERLING AT THE DISPOSAL OF THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT FOR PRELIMINARY STUDIES WHICH MIGHT BE NEEDED FOR PROJECTS IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS. THESE COULD INCLUDE A FORESTRY PROGRAMME ALREADY BEING WORKED OUT BY ABIDJAN OFFICIALS.MR. CHEVRIER SAID CANADA'S AID PROGRAMME HAD SO FAR CONSISTED MAINLY IN GIVING A SCHOLARSHIPS TO IVORY COAST STUDENTS AND SENDING TEACHERS TO THE IVORY COAST.

    PRESENT AT THE NEWS CONFERENCE WERE ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE CANADIAN ECONOMIC MISSION AND IVORY COAST FINANCE OFFICIALS INCLUDING THE MINISTER OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS, M. KONAN BEDIE.
