    Background: A suburban community in Tokyo has been using its imagination in tackling the problem of disposal of household waste -- the refuse is being recycled as fuel for electrical energy.

    SYNOPSIS: The ten million residents of the Japanese capital produce an average of more than seventeen-thousand tonnes of household rubbish every day. One suburban community is using its share of the waste as a source of energy. Sanitation trucks pick up about 700 tonnes of rubbish a day from the community and take ti to the Katsushikaku Sanitation Centre. There it's dumped into a large bunker and kept for incineration.

    A clam-shell bucket crane is operated by remote control from inside a glass-enclosed control room above. It lifts the flammable waste material from the bunker and drops it into a nearby furnace.

    The water in the boiler above the furnace turns into steam which in turn drives the generator turbine. As much as 12,000 kilowatts of electricity can be produced every hour. The power produced here supplies all the electricity used at the plant. Apart from being completely self-sufficient in electrical energy, the Sanitation Centre produces a large surplus of electricity.

    The surplus electricity is fed into the Tokyo Electric Power Company through which it helps to provide heat for an old people's home and a local swimming pool. Household waste is playing a unique part in Japan's effort to find new energy sources for the future.
