Background: Rioters in Belfast today (Friday) seized a petrol tanker and set fire to buses during clashes with British troops in the northern Ireland capital. Part of the tanker's load of two-and-a-half thousand gallons was used to make petrol bombs before troops recaptured the vehicle.
Friday is traditionally a bad day in Belfast trouble spots. But it is unusual for the violence to break out during daylight. BBC camera crews took full advantage of this situation to get some remarkable footage of British troops policing the area under a hail of petrol bombs.
The BBC teams were in on the action from its start--during a combined raid by police and troops on a Roman Catholic district. They brought back film of the captured petrol tanker, of commandeered buses blazing in street barricades and of the troops firing rubber bullets at the rioters.
