    PER IVER MOE, 20-YEAR-OLD NORWEGIAN ELECTRICIAN TODAY (SUNDAY) CLINCHED THE WORLD SPEED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN HE WON THE 1,500 METRES EVENT IN TWO MINUTES 8 SECONDS. THIS IS A CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD.

    MOE RACED AGAINST RUDI LIEBRECHTS OF HOLLAND, WHO FINISHED ONE SECOND BEHIND THE WINNER. HOWEVER, THE TIMES IN THIS EVENT WERE SO CLOSE THAT HIS PERFORMANCE ONLY WON HIM FIFTH PLACE.

    THE SECOND PLACE WINNER WAS ARD SCHENK OF HOLLAND. HE RACED AGAINST JOUKO LAUNONEN OF FINLAND. SCHENK'S TIME WAS TWO MINUTES 8.5 SECONDS. LAUNONEN WAS FOURTH WITH 2 MINUTES 8.7 SECONDS.

    THE RUSSIAN SKATER, EDUARD MATUSEVITCH WAS THIRD IN TWO MINUTES 8.6 SECONDS. HE RACED AGAINST PAUL ENOCK OF CANADA, WHO WAS UNPLACED.

    THIS WAS THE ONLY RACE OF THE SERIES THAT MOE WON, BUT HIS TIMES IN THE OTHER EVENTS ENABLED HIM TO TAKE THE TITLE. LAUNONEN WAS SECOND OVERALL, AND SCHENK, THIRD.
