  • Description

The West German authorities have not forgotten the Munich killings at the last Olympics and are trying hard to prevent any further violence during the coming World Cup football tournament.

The Brazilian team arrived at its Frankfurt hotel headquarters on Thursday (6 June) under security precautions greater than any seen at a World Cup before. They have the whole hotel to themselves and a wooden wall, re-inforced by barbed wire, encircle the grounds.

Armed plain clothes men and West German and Brazilian security guards watch over the team and grounds. A massive wooden gate closes off the entrance and the inside force is in contact with Frankfurt's main police station at all times.

All newsmen wishing to visit the Brazilian camp must have special passes from their own authorities.

The strict security restricts the natural good humour and friendliness of the Brazilians, who like to have re-unions with their friends. To help maintain their morale, their bus has Brazilian music played constantly as they travel.

West German authorities claim they have made suitable security plans. Sir Stanley Rous, President of the International Football Federation (FIFA), has expressed satisfaction with the arrangements. But whether they are sufficient to maintain security from Munich (in the South) to Hamburg and West Berlin (in the North) remains to be seen.
