  • Description

Khmer Navy vessels, mainly armed river launches, have been taking part in the recent renewal of fighting around the besieged provincial capital of Kompong Thom, about 70 miles (118 kilometres) north of Phnom Penh. Last week, five battalions of troops slipped into the provincial capital by river convoy, and other naval launches--shown in this film--have been combing the rivers and lakes in the district and attacking communist river-bank positions. The film has some dramatic action sequences, including a naval launch under heavy machine-gun fire from the bank.

SYNOPSIS: The war in Indo-China--and in the Khmer Republic last week, the country's Navy played an active role in renewed fighting for the besieged provincial capital of kompong Thom, which is about 70 miles north of the capital, Phnom Penh.

The operation involves several battalions of khmer troops trying to oliver Kompong Thom, which has been almost totally surrounded and cut off by communist troops for most of the year. Last week, the Navy ferried five battalions of troops into the town up the Sen River--all of which managed to slip in unseen by the opposing forces.

Otherwise, the Navy's operations have been mainly search-and-destroy missing along river and lake banks in the area.

In addition to the Naval operation, 15,000 land troops were last week trying to break through the cordon of communist forces surrounding Kompong Thom. Air strikes were also brought into operation, and latest reports from the battle front over the weekend said fighting was still heavy--and that there was no indication of which side was winning.
