  • Description

Italy's minority Christian Democrat Government, led by Fernando Tambroni, received narrow 300-293 vote of confidence in the Chamber of Deputies, Rome, Apl 8. But because 24 Fascists supported the Government, Minister for South Italian affairs-Giulio Pastore, resigned, and two more ministers registered protests; they did not wish to hold office dependent on undesired allies.

Signor Tambroni took office Mar 26, with 272 seats in the Chamber, and it was thought Christian Democrat internal dissension might lead to a collapse before the Government ever faced a vote of confidence. That problem is surmounted, and now Signor Tambroni expects assent from the Senate (Upper House) where his party has a majority.

This week-end Christian Democrats will confer to decide their attitude to the Fascists; if Signor Tambroni decides to give them ministerial posts there could be defection among his own followers and Government collapse; equally, if no Fascists are appointed Ministers, they may withdraw their support and the Government will be at the mercy of a hostile Chamber.
