Background: Queen Elizabeth became the first British sovereign to visit Indonesia when she arrived in the port of Djakarta, Tan jung Priok, on board the Royal 'Britannia' on Monday (18 March).

As the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were driven through the crowd-lined streets of the capital, they received a wildly enthusiastic welcome. For a few moments their car was halted by scores of cheering school children running out onto the road.

The prospect that visit might have to be cut short by a political crisis at home was averted on Tuesday (19 March) when a parliamentary challenge to Prime Minister Harold Wilson's minority government collapsed.
