  • Description

Riot police and thousands of strikers battled in the centre of Athens, Greece, on Tuesday (25 May) and by evening 60 policemen and 39 strikers had been injured and a 65-year-old housewife, caught in the running fights, was killed when she was run over by a police car.

The centre of Athens looked like a battlefield, with tear gas smoke hanging over areas usually thronged with tourists.

The violence erupted when about 10,000 workers who had been on strike since Monday (24 May) tried to march on parliament, where a bill on trade unions was passed in principle, banning unofficial and political strikes.

Riot police supported by armoured cars blocked al roads to the parliament buildings. When the demonstrators refused to disperse, the police made baton charges and then used tear gas.

The demonstrators retaliated by throwing stones, building barricades, overturning cars and lighting fires in the streets. Later a police spokesman said that shots had been fired at police who had surrounded a group of demonstrators, but that although the police were forced to run for cover, no-one was hurt.
