    Christmas celebrations for the people of Kenya got underway on Wednesday (20 December) when the Mayor of Nairobi, Miss Margaret Kenyatta, switched on the lights of the city's Christmas tree.

    Thousands of Kenyans crowded outside Nairobi's City Hall to watch the ceremony and sing carols to music by the Kenyan Police Band.

    In her address to the crowd, Miss Kenyatta, daughter of Kenya's President, appealed to them to give generously to the nation's annual charity collection.

    As soon as the lights of the Christmas tree flashed on, Father Christmas appeared and was immediately mobbed by hundreds of enthusiastic children.

    SYNOPSIS: Miss Margaret Kenyatta, Mayor of Nairobi arrived at the City Hall to initiate Christmas celebrations on Wednesday. Miss Kenyatta, daughter of Kenya's President, was greeted by civic dignitaries and thousands of people who crowded around the city centre.

    After appealing to the Kenyans present to generously donate to the nation's annual charity collection, Miss Kenyatta switched on the lights of the city's Christmas Tree.

    Hundreds of lights lit up all over the tree, much to the delight of the children watching the ceremony. Later they sang Christmas carols to the music of the Kenyan Police Band.

    Once the tree was lit Father Christmas appeared and was immediately mobbed by hundreds of enthusiastic children.

    To many Kenyans the Nairobi Christmas Tree is the symbol of peace and goodwill during the Christmas festive season.
